Artist Series #1 J a m i e MacPherson

Being brought up in Scotland is something of a treat, but somehow when you see it in a different angle, through the lens of someone else, it somehow makes you relish it even more.

We speak to Jamie MacPherson, a Photographer based on the Black Isle, in the highlands of Scotland.

Let's start with the basics, how did you get into photography?

I bought my first dslr about 2 and a half years ago but I have almost always had a camera. I first started taking photographs of the night sky a couple of years back after witnessing a beautiful northern lights show right above my house on the Black Isle. Ever since then I have been well and truly hooked.

I know for myself, a lot of inspiration came from living in Scotland my whole life, have you found it to be a creative benefit to yourself?

I think living in Scotland is a massive benefit creatively, especially so in the Highlands. A short drive from Inverness can have you in the middle of nowhere, and thats something I take advantage of and am very grateful for. My dad is a dedicated Munro bagger, who would from a young age take my sister and I into the hills.

His love for the hills and Scotland itself has had a huge impact on me and the way I live my life. To be standing in a remote glen with mountains surrounding you, with no sound but the wind whistling passed is my idea of heaven - it really lets your mind run free.

What is your ultimate dream of a collaboration and project?

As for my dream project/collaboration - I really have no idea. I would like to do more underwater photography and a goal of mine is to swim with wild orcas, so combining the two of these would appeal to me. I think I will probably have to go back to Norway to swim with orcas, but if I was lucky enough to see them in Scotland I wouldn't hesitate to jump in the water with them.

You're currently looking at your dream home, what does it look like?

My dream home would be a relaxed space, close to nature and it would have to be as near to self sufficient as possible. I have no desire to own a great big house that I would be paying off for the rest of my life. I love the idea of living off-grid with as little effect on the environment as possible. A big greenhouse in the garden with a few chickens and goats running around, solar panels and a turbine for power and enough space inside to comfortably have friends over for dinner would do me nicely.

Are there any places in Scotland, you'd still love to photograph?

I would love to visit and photograph all of the Scottish islands, although I think it will take quite a while as there's almost 800, so maybe not all of them. St Kilda is the top of my list but I'm unsure when I'll be able to get there. I would love to sail there myself and hopefully will be able to in the not so distant future. My favourite place in Scotland is the far N/W Highlands. I don't think I'll ever tire of visiting there and there's still plenty of places there for me to explore.
